Translating India for the GenNext: From east to the heartland and now the west

We are delighted to announce that Ponytale Books will be publishing Damodar Mauzo's award winning young adult novella, Tsunami Simon in 2013.

Originally written in Konkani in 2009, Tsunami Simon is the story on a young 13 year old Simon from Goa’s fisherfolk community. Simon is on a vacation to the Tamilnadu coast and gets caught in the tsunami.

Tsunami Simon has been translated into English by Xavier Cota.

The book was awarded the prestigious Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar in 2011.

Ponytale Books publishes the best of writing from Indian languages into English for children and young adults. "We are excited to announce that we will be publishing Sri Damodar Mauzo's Tsunami Simon later this year. With the publication of his work in English, Konkani will become the third major Indian language to be published in translation by Ponytale Books, after Bengali and Hindi," commented Pranav Kumar Singh, Publisher, Ponytale Books.

In addition to publishing original writing in English for children in the 8 to 18 category, including a number of first-time authors, Ponytale Books has published Abanindranath Tagore, Sunil Gangopadhyay, Sirshendu Mukhopadyaya, Samaresh Basu and Suchitra Bhattacharya from Bengali; and Munshi Premchand from Hindi, into English.

Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee's translation of Sunil Gangopadhyay's Kakababu adventure, The Dreadful Beauty, was the first Indian children's book in translation to be awarded the IBBY Honor List in 2012.
