Ponytale Books to publish English translations of Sunil Gangopadhyay's Santu-Kakababu novellas

Ponytale Books is proud to announce that Shri Sunil Gangopadhyay has given the translation and publication rights for his immensely popular Santu-Kakababu novellas into English to Ponytale Books.

Sahitya Akademi award winner, one of the best known Indian literary luminaries originally writing in Bengali, and presently the President of Sahitya Akademi, Shri Sunil Gangopadhyay created the character duo, Santu-Kakababu in the early 1970s. The immensely popular duo are famous for their adventures to solve mysteries affecting Indian history, culture and national pride. They have embarked on numerous missions of which Shri Gangopadhyay has penned over 20 novellas and short stories.

Raja Roychowdhury aka Kakababu, a former high ranking government official, is a widely travelled and well read person. However he lost one of his legs in an accident and now uses crutches. A bachelor and fiercely independent person, he refuses all help inspite of his disability. However, he is very fond of his thirteen year old nephew, Santu, whom he takes on all his missions. It is Santu, who narrates the incidents of his mentally strong, adventurous and, at times, reticent, Kakababu.

Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee, former Director of National Book Trust and presently Director, K K Birla Foundation, has agreed to translate the first book that launched Santu-Kakababu, Bhoyonkar Sundor, as The Dreadful Beauty, into English.

Subir Roy, one of the best known Indian illustrators, has designed the cover and has illustrated the book.

The adventure leads Santu-Kakababu to beautiful Kashmir, in pursuit of an important relic from the past that could re-write how an important chapter from Indian history is viewed. But...

...We are not giving away more. Please wait for another five weeks to read if Santu and Kakababu succeed in their mission...

We will also be publishing Sobuj Deeper Raja, translated by Tridiv Chowdhury as The King of the Verdant Island in November 2009.
